UN report: The global population will reach 8.5 billion in 2030
China News Service, June 17 (Reporter Ma Delin) A report released by the United Nations on the 17th said that by 2030, the global population will reach 8.5 billion; in 2050, the global population will reach 9.7 billion. But population growth will slow down in the next few decades.
The report, entitled "World Population Prospects 2019," said that about half of the world's new population will be concentrated in nine countries over the next 30 years: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Congo (Kinshasa), Ethiopia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Egypt and United States. India will replace China as the world's most populous country by 2027.
The report pointed out that many of the countries with the fastest population growth in the next 30 years are least developed countries. Rapid population growth is not conducive to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in these countries, and sustainable development goals such as poverty reduction, hunger eradication and health education will face challenges.
According to the report, in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, some countries and regions in Asia and Latin America, the working age (25-64 years old) has grown rapidly, bringing opportunities for economic growth. However, in order to give full play to the “demographic dividend”, these countries and regions must increase investment in medical care and education to create conditions for sustained economic growth.
In terms of population life expectancy, the average life expectancy at birth for the global population increased from 64.2 years in 1990 to 72.6 years in 2019, and is expected to increase to 77.1 years in 2050. However, life expectancy at birth in the least developed countries is 7.4 years less than the global average, mainly due to higher child and maternal mortality rates, as well as violence, conflict, and the spread of AIDS.
As life expectancy increases, the global population ageing is also increasing. The report predicts that the proportion of people over the age of 65 in the world will reach 16% in 2050, and there will be an elderly person over 65 years old in about six people; this figure is 11% in 2019. By 2050, the ageing population in West Asia and North Africa, Central and South Asia, East and South-East Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean is expected to double; the proportion of older people in Europe and North America may reach a quarter. The report pointed out that population aging will put pressure on countries' social security systems.
The World Population Prospects 2019 was prepared and published by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) of the United Nations Secretariat, bringing together demographic data from 235 countries and regions from 1950 to the present, and global and national countries from 2019 to 2100. And population changes at the regional level were predicted.
